Questions & Answers
Here are some common questions and answers. If you cannot find the question and/or answer you are looking for, we invite you to contact us.
What is the "Optimist Academy"
This website is essentially an education resource that hosts a series of blog posts as quick tutorials, provides a means to register to take more in-depth online workshops and provides links to learning resources that are available on other AMS&NW District 13 and Optimist International websites. Our goal is to provide a means for more Optimist members from our District clubs to enjoy the opportunity to participate in online versions of workshops and seminars that have been hosted at District conferences and conventions.
Is "Optimist Academy" meant to replace District workshops
No. We recommend attending a District meeting to participate in workshops and seminars if you can. But we realize that many members have other obligations that prevent them from travelling to District meetings to take advantage of in-class workshops and seminars. We also plan to offer tutorials and workshops that have not been provided before at District meetings.
What is the difference between a tutorial and an online workshop
A tutorial is usually a written as a single page article in our Quick Lessons blog. An online workshop or seminar is a much more comprehensive online "course" that consists of a series of related modules that are normally taken in sequential order. Our plan is to prepare and host workshops and seminars in a free Learning Delivery System called Schoology.
Will I find a bunch of "build a club website" tutorials here
No. The "Optimist Academy" is focused on delivering an opportunity to become a better prepared Optimist member, so our topics will focus on the core Optimist material. We will host the how-to "computer" and "web" tutorials on our companion Put Your Club Online website and Put Your Club Online using Blogger site.
Do I need to be an "Optimist" member to use these tutorials
Pretty much, yes. Since the focus of our content is "Optimist" related, non-Optimists may not gain much value from our tutorials.
Who prepares the materials
Some of the material will be based on existing Optimist International official "Workshop" seminars, other material will be developed in-house by members of the District team.
Will I need special software?
No ... all you will need is access to the internet and the ability to view and listed to video and audio presentations.
Does the training cost anything
No ... your District fees help to subsidize the minimal costs it takes to host the training that is made available.
What if I cannot find a tutorial or workshop I am looking for
We invite you to submit a suggestion for a new tutorial or online workshop. We also have links to learning resources that are hosted on other websites.
